A medical procedure that involves collecting a small sample of amniotic fluid for testing. It is performed after the 15th week of pregnancy. The procedure is not painful, although you may experience some minor discomfort. The risk of complications is minimal (0.1%).
A medical procedure that drains off the extra amniotic fluid. The procedure is carried out to minimize the risk of preterm birth.
An anatomical defect of the thin muscle that separates the chest from the abdominal cavity that involves a hole (defect) in the diaphragm. Through the hole in the diaphragm, abdominal organs enter the chest cavity, thus compressing the lungs and other organs in the chest. The prognosis in CDH depends on the type and the size of the defect.
complete absence of the diaphragm. This is a severe form of CDH, in which the abdominal organs enter the chest cavity, causing problems with breathing and the digestive tract.
A very large and complex machine (heart-lung machine) used when a newborn has a serious cardiopulmonary failure to stabilize the newborn’s condition and prepare for possible surgery when the baby’s condition becomes appropriately stable.
An outpouching of an abnormally thin part of the diaphragm into the chest cavity.
(fetoscopic endotracheal occlusion) – An endoscopic surgery to block an unborn baby’s airway. This is an in-utero procedure (performed during pregnancy) and involves the placement of a balloon into an unborn baby’s airway for several weeks to allow the lungs to grow. The FETO procedure has been shown to be highly effective based on results from clinical trials (a baby has twice the chance of survival after birth).
An individual’s complete set of chromosomes.
(lung area to head circumference ratio) – A parameter used to assess the severity of CDH. Typically, an LHR < 1.0 indicates severe CDH and the mother is found eligible for FETO procedure.
(aCGH) - A DNA test performed to determine chromosomal abnormalities.
(observed to expected lung area to head circumference ratio) – A parameter used for assessing the severity of CDH. Typically, an LHR < 25% indicates severe CDH and the mother is found eligible for FETO procedure.
(Maternal fetal medicine specialist) – A doctor who deals with high-risk pregnancy (diseases in pregnancy, fetal abnormalities).
A congenital defect associated with varying degrees of underdevelopment of the vascular, bronchial and parenchymal components of the lungs and the bronchial tree.
