While in the womb, the baby does not breathe on their own – the mother breathes for the baby, and oxygen is supplied to the baby through the umbilical cord. Therefore, newborns with CDH will face important respiratory challenges immediately after birth. Despite the herniation of the abdominal contents into the chest, babies with CDH usually develop normally during pregnancy: they grow and move in the same way as healthy babies.
