Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s diaphragm – a thin sheet of muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest.
he anatomical abnormalities of the diaphragm due to CDH include herniation, eventration (outpouching of an abnormally thin part of the diaphragm into the chest cavity) and complete agenesis (absence) of the diaphragm.
The hole in the diaphragm must be repaired surgically within the first few days of the baby’s life. The displacement of abdominal organs into the chest, however, presents a serious problem.
While in the womb, the baby does not breathe on their own – the mother breathes for the baby, and oxygen is supplied to the baby through the umbilical cord.
