Diagnosing

CDH is most commonly diagnosed at the routine mid-pregnancy ultrasound scan (“anomaly scan”). Typically, an ultrasound scan will show the stomach and intestines inside the chest cavity (in babies with left-sided CDH) and the baby’s heart displaced across to the opposite side of the hole in the diaphragm.
If your doctor suspects your baby has CDH, this diagnosis should be confirmed at a Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center which, ideally, also performs in-utero fetal therapeutic procedures.
